Before 1857, there was 1837
The tax
Farmers here once paid tax in produce. Under the British, the tax had to be paid in cash. Anger spread from farm to farm.
The treasury at Bellare
The British treasury stood at the Bellare bungalow. In 1837 the rebels marched here and seized it.
Thirteen days
They went on to Mangaluru and raised their own flag at Bavutagudde on 5 April. It flew for about 13 days before British forces crushed the revolt.
Banglegudde
The hill at Bellare is now named among the sites of the Amara Sullia uprising, twenty years before 1857.
